Wingate Primary Pupils Build Friendships Across Borders During German Exchange

Five pupils from Wingate Primary School recently enjoyed an unforgettable trip to Wuppertal, Germany, as part of an international exchange programme. The group, made up of two Year 4 pupils and three Year 5 pupils, embraced the opportunity to experience a new culture, make new friends and build their confidence. Their adventure began in memorable fashion, with a special visit to the aircraft cockpit and the chance to meet the pilots before take-off.

During their stay, the pupils were warmly welcomed by their partner school, quickly forming friendships with German children while learning new words and phrases in both English and German. They enjoyed a range of cultural experiences, including a traditional barbecue, a game of dodgeball and a trip on Wuppertal's famous suspended monorail. Inspired by the legend of Tuffi the Elephant, the children shared the North East's own tale of the Lambton Worm, creating a unique cultural exchange.

The visit has already led to an exciting collaborative project, with pupils from both schools set to write a sequel to the Lambton Worm story together. Reflecting Connect Multi Academy Trust's values of collaboration, respect and inclusivity, the exchange has strengthened international friendships and encouraged pupils to learn more about different cultures and traditions. The children returned home with lasting memories, new friendships and a greater appreciation of the opportunities that learning beyond the classroom can provide.
